1994 – Dare to Care

History

The Dare to Care, International Camporee, had 12,232 attendees from 23 different countries. The original campsite was arranged to be on a private farm with beautiful rolling terrain. However, the Waco, TX incident captured the news at the same time and misinformation was presented about the Adventist Church and its association with the David Koresh movement. Therefore, the private property owner rescinded his offer to allow the Camporee to use his property for camping.

The Camporee Director, Pastor Ron Whitehead, and other Camporee leaders, spent extra time in prayer and gave extra effort to identify another campsite near the Red Rocks Amphitheater, 10 miles west of Denver, CO.

The only camping site that would accommodate over 12,000 people that was near the Red Rocks Amphitheater was the Bandimere Speedway, a commercial drag-racing track located in Morrison, CO.

The owners of the race track were at first reluctant to allow the young people to use their facility because they were concerned how supervision would work with over 12,000 young people onsite. Because of this concern, Camporee leadership requested the owners of the speedway to attend a conference wide Youth Rally at the Denver First Seventh-day Adventist Church so that they could see and experience first-hand the quality youth that are in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Following the Youth Rally, Pastor Ron was walking out with Dave Bandimere, owner of the speedway. Dave remarked to Ron that if this was the quality of the youth he was bringing to his property, then Ron would have his total support to talk to the other family members in the business.
